Real Estate, (www.R2Rrealestate.com), is a new real estate website dedicated to physicians-in-training. R2R allows residents and medical students to list their property for sale or lease, free of charge. By connecting outgoing sellers with incoming buyers, R2R Real Estate aims to eliminate full commission fees and the threat of unsold property for its members.
R2R Real Estate was founded by Rahul Gokhale M.D, a 2006 graduate of the University of Cincinnati Orthopaedic training program. The idea was borne out of frustration with the inability to sell his town home in a timely fashion. His property was on the market from March 2006 until its sale in August of 2007. For an entire year during his fellowship, he was forced to pay rent in one place and mortgage back in Cincinnati.
Two key ingredients form the foundation of this web-based service. One is the predictable turnover of medical students and residents every summer thus creating a built-in real estate market. The other is camaraderie and the genuine interest of a resident or student to help out a fellow doctor-in-training. Using this formula, graduating home owners can sell their property to eager residents or students free of commission and move on to the next phase of their careers. Likewise, resident/student buyers can benefit from the honest advice they receive from their graduating counterparts as they move into their ideal home.
R2R has also developed a leasing section to accommodate those who prefer to lease out their apartment or home. The site is also developing partnerships with rental complexes to provide exclusive benefits to members of the R2R community.
After a successful trial run during the 2008 Match campaign at the University of Cincinnati, www.R2Rrealestate.com has expanded nationwide. Residents and medical students from all 50 states can now list their property, free of charge. R2R maintains a presence on Facebook and relies on word of mouth advertising to grow. The website is featured in the December 29, 2008 American Medical Association newsletter (http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2008/12/29/bisb1229.htm).
